  1. Rio de Janeiro means "January River" but, the funny thing is, the river is actually a bay.                                                       

  2. San Paulo, not Rio de Janeiro, is Brazil's largest city.                                                                                  

  3. Rio's local people (residents) call themselves "Cariocas."                             

  4. Rio de Janeiro's nickname is "Cidade Maravilhosa" (Marvelous City).                                                                                                  

  5. Some of the famous sites to visit while in Rio de Janeiro are:
    - The Christ the Redeemer Statue
    - Sugarloaf Mountain
    - Corcovado
    - Escardia Selaron
    - Tijuca National Park
    - Copacabana Beach and Ipanema Beach
     

  6. Brazil's most famous dance is the samba.  There are over 200 samba schools in Rio.               
     

  7. The flag of Brazil has three colors on it: green, yellow and blue.
     

  8. Every year Rio de Janeiro (and all of Brazil) has a BIG party called Carnival.  People dress up in costumes and there are lots of parades. 
     

  9. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.  It also gets hit by lightning many times a year.                                                                                  

  10. Copacabana Beach and Ipanema beach are two world famous beaches located in Rio de Janeiro.
