  1. Venice is actually made up of over 100 small islands.  The islands are separated by bodies of water called canals.

  2. People use bridges to go over the canals.  There are over 400 bridges in Venice.

  3. Small boats, called gondolas, take people for rides on the canals.  All gondolas must be painted black.

  4. The person that steers the gondola is called a gondolier.  There are 300 - 400 gondoliers in Venice.  Currently, only one is a woman.

  5. Some of the famous sites to visit while in Venice are:
    - The Rialto Bridge
    - Saint Mark's Square
    - The Grand Canal
    - The Doge's Palace
    - Saint Mark's Basilica
    - The Campanile (Saint Mark's Bell Tower)

  6. The Campanile (Bell Tower) fell down (collapsed) in 1902.  It was re-built in 1912 to look exactly like the original Bell Tower.

  7. The flag of Italy has three colors on it: red, white and green.

  8. Every year Venice has a BIG party called Carnavale.  People dress up in costumes (see the picture on the left) and have lots of fun.

  9. No skate boards, roller skates or bikes are allowed to be used in Venice.

  10. The famous explorer, Marco Polo, was born in Venice.
