  1. Machu Picchu is over 7,000 feet above sea level and is the number one tourist destination in Peru.   It is located in the Andes Mountains.                                                                   

  2. Machu Picchu was built by a group of people called the Incas and their language was called quechua.                                                                                   

  3. Machu Picchu means "Old Peak" or "Old Mountain" in the quechua language.                                                                  

  4. Machu Picchu was discovered by professor Hiram Bingham in 1911.                                                                                               

  5. Some of the famous places to see while in Machu Picchu - or traveling in Peru - are:
    - The Inca Trail & The Sun Gate
    - Huayna Picchu
    - The Sacred Valley
    - Side trip to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park
    - Side trip to the Amazon Rainforest
    - Side trip to see the Nazca Lines

     

  6. The Incas were great craftsmen and builders.  Each stone, of each building, was cut by hand and there is nothing holding the stones together.  No cement or other glue holds the stones together.         
     

  7. The flag of Peru has two colors on it: red and white.
     

  8. Llamas are all over Machu Picchu and often try to get into any pictures you are taking.           
     

  9. You can get your passport stamped when you enter Machu Picchu.  It's a nice reminder of your trip.                                                                                   

  10. You can hike the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu.
