  1. In the past, Saint Petersburg had other names.  It has also been known as Petrograd and Leningrad.                            

  2. Russia is one of the few countries that is part of two (2) continents.  While Saint Petersburg belongs to the continent of Europe, other areas of Russia are part of the continent of Asia.                                                                            

  3. The Peter and Paul Cathedral is the highest cathedral in Russia.                                                                                        

  4. Saint Petersburg has over 750 bridges; currently twelve (12) of them are bridges that actually move.                                                                                                

  5. Some of the famous sites to visit while in Saint Petersburg are:
    - The State Hermitage Museum and the Winter Palace
    - The Peterhof Palace
    - Catherine Palace
    - Palace Square
    - Saint Isaac's Cathedral
    - Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (don't let the name scare you)

     

  6. The Hermitage is the second (2nd) largest art museum in the world.  It was founded by Empress Catherine the Great.                                  
     

  7. The flag of Russia has three colors on it: red, white and blue.
     

  8. The Alexander Column (in Palace Square) weighs 600 tons!  Also, there is nothing keeping it straight.  It is free-standing.     
     

  9. Saint Petersburg is a popular name for a city.  Besides the one in Russia, there are at least 15 cities in the United States of America that are also named Saint Petersburg.                                                                                             

  10. The Mariinsky Ballet is one of the world's best ballet companies.  Performances are held in the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
