  1. Italy is divided into 20 regions and then each city is part of a region.  Florence is located in the Tuscany region of Italy.                                                                                          

  2. Florence has the nickname of "Cradle of the Renaissance" because of all the great artists that lived there a very, very long time ago.                                             

  3. Michelangelo's famous sculpture (David) is located at the Accademia Gallery, a museum in Florence.  Another museum in Florence, the Uffizi Gallery, also has many beautiful pieces of art by famous artists.                                                                                          

  4. The piano was created in Florence.  The inventor was a Florentine named Bartolomeo Cristofori.                                                                                                  

  5. Some of the famous sites to visit while in Florence are:
    - Accademia Gallery
    - Uffizi Gallery
    - Ponte Vecchio Bridge
    - Cathedral Square: The Florence Cathedral (il Duomo), Florence Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile Tower
    - Palazzo Vecchio
    - Pitti Palace

     

  6. The Medici's, a very powerful family, ruled Florence for about 350 years.        
     

  7. The flag of Italy has three colors on it: red, white and green.
     

  8. Gelato (Italian ice cream) was invented in Florence.           
     

  9. Florence was the first city in Europe to have paved streets.                                                                                                   

  10. Leonardo da Vinci (a famous artist) was born in Florence.
