  1. Istanbul is the only city in the world located on two continents (Europe and Asia). It is also the largest city in Turkey.                                                                                                    a

  2. Istanbul used to be called Constantinople.                                                                                         

  3. Almost 100% of the people living in Istanbul are Muslims and are followers of the Islamic faith. Istanbul has over 3,000 mosques.                                                                                 

  4. Galata Tower has a large deck that allows a 360 degree view of the city.                                                                                        

  5. Some of the famous sites to visit while in Istanbul are:
    - Topkapi Palace
    - The Blue Mosque
    - The Hagia Sophia
    - Dolmabahce Palace
    - The Basilica Cistern
    - The Grand Bazaar

     

  6. The Blue Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul with six (6) minarets.                       
     

  7. The flag of Turkey is red with while symbols on it.  Many people call it "al bayrak" (the red flag)  or "al sancak" (the red banner).
     

  8. The grand bazaar is the biggest, and oldest, covered bazaar in the world.                         
     

  9. The country of Holland is known for their tulips (a type of flower).  In reality, the first tulips were grown in Istanbul and then sent to Holland.                                                                                        

  10. Mystery writer Agatha Christie wrote her famous novel "Murder on the Orient Express" while staying in Istanbul.
